We are seeking an experienced and passionate Head Ranger to oversee the reserve’s field operations, wildlife management and ranger team at a luxury safari lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve. This is a senior operational role suited to an accomplished safari professional with strong leadership skills, extensive wildlife and conservation knowledge, and a genuine passion for creating exceptional and safe guest experiences. Key Responsibilities Ranger Team Leadership Lead, supervise and mentor the ranger and guiding team. Manage staff schedules, duty allocations and daily field operations. Monitor performance and support ongoing training and professional development. Ensure consistently high standards across all guiding and field activities. Wildlife & Conservation Oversee wildlife monitoring and contribute to conservation and ecological management initiatives. Support anti-poaching and wildlife protection efforts. Ensure field operations adhere to established conservation policies and best practices. Work collaboratively with relevant conservation and research partners where required. Guest Experience Ensure game drives, guided walks and other safari activities are safe, informative and engaging. Deliver exceptional guiding and maintain high standards of guest interaction and hospitality. Handle guest queries, feedback and incidents professionally. Create memorable safari experiences while maintaining a strong focus on safety. Safety & Field Operations Take responsibility for safety protocols across all field activities. Manage emergency procedures and respond effectively to incidents in the field. Ensure safari vehicles, equipment and communication systems are maintained and operational. Maintain strong situational awareness and sound decision-making in a wilderness environment. Administration & Reporting Maintain accurate wildlife sightings, operational and ranger activity records. Assist with equipment procurement, budgets and management of field resources. Liaise with lodge management regarding daily operations, events and field requirements. Ensure efficient planning and execution of all field activities. Minimum Requirements Matric / Grade 12. Relevant qualification in Wildlife Management, Conservation or a related field. Minimum 5–7 years’ experience in safari guiding, wildlife management or field operations. Proven experience leading and managing a ranger or conservation team. Valid driver's licence with professional off-road driving experience. Strong knowledge of local wildlife, ecosystems and conservation practices. Knowledge and understanding of anti-poaching operations would be advantageous. Strong understanding of wilderness safety and emergency procedures. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays. First Aid or Wilderness First Aid certification would be advantageous.
